I am writing it as I plan my own medieval wedding and here you will find inspirations, do-it-yourself stuff and links from the period 1050-1536 A.D. Enjoy!Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.comBlogger106125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-14860561133601024902013-04-27T19:20:00.000+02:002013-04-27T19:20:12.322+02:00My Medieval Wedding - the Official PicturesAfter champagne our family was taken on a guided tour around the museum while we took the not so standard wedding photos. :-) First on the jousting tribune. Oh and once again, the photographer is the brilliant Emiel Rye.
We wanted our pictures to show a story and be as playful as we are. What's the use of having a medieval theme if you have to be all serious about the photos?
I am not going to comment each one, just a plain photo bombardment.
Still I just wanted to continue a bit on my neglected tale of our wedding day.

We ended the ceremony walking out to another Enaid song - The Road to Camelot as our guests showered us with rice and dried flowers, roses and lavender. The tradition comes from medieval times when the guests would
toss grain on the bride and groom to ensure them fertility.
I smiled so much my cheeks hurt and it was a wonderful relief to walk away with my husband.

After the congratulations and a whole lot of kissing I could finally greet our guests properly. My dad had brewed his own Strawberry and Elderflower champagne that we toasted in and took the time to marvel at the amount of effort our guests had put into their outfits.
The DIY banners I had made fit very well in the Naust were we took the drinks and added a little color.
To the left you can see my wonderful dad and sister taking charge of the champagne.

Our photographers picked a spot by the lake were we could take pictures of the closest family, which isn't so small because Robert has 5 siblings.
I loved the background and one of my favorits is one of me and my sister.
The fun photo of Robert with his brothers and sister is pricless too.

And finally the photo of all the guests was taken at the knights' jousting areana tribune.
After two years of intense wedding planning I just needed to focus on something completely different for a while. But I still want to share our wonderful day with you, because it was amazing. Sadly I got ill during the main course, but after a few hours sleep I was able to dance and enjoy the wedding cake for the remainder of the evening.

The ceremony took place at the medieval museum by the lake. I wanted no lavish decorations and had only arranged for benches and DIY pennants at the site. Waiting for the music to start I was so nervous, crying, then laughing and so touched by the powerful moment. Then my sister-in-law came running and proclaimed that neither the rings, the rice bags or the programs were at the ceremony site. She ran to get them, making me slightly more nervous in the process, but frankly I wasn't to bothered, because all I could think about was getting married to my man.

I walked up to The Wedding by Enaid with my dad and my sister and was so wonderfully surprised to see that everyone had found a medieval costume to wear. It was difficult to do anything but look to Robert and I could see he was struggling with the tears as well.

Robert had his 3 brothers with him and I had my sister, whose hand I was squeezing the entire time. Then the Official got up and married us. I don't recall what she said, only that Robert and I smiled at each other because of the severe and dry legal phrases. The sky above was dramatically clouded, emphasising the feel of moment.

The whole ceremony was simple and beautiful. We sang two songs, one of them a medieval sounding tune about a knight and a maiden. It was a favourite of mine when I was little. We exchanged rings and had that magical kiss and a long warm hug. I wanted to stand like that forever.

From the early renaissance in Italy though, all the fine ladies have earrings made with gold and pearls. Italy is a European centre of innovation during the medieval times and the renaissance and this earring is from the early Middle Ages, 7th century:
You might be able to find something similar - gold, colorful stones, circular and cross motives.
Along with the tendency to use coins in jewlery in the prior nordic periode of the Viking Age I thought I would post you some earrings inspired by coins:
Their photos from photographer WeddingsBySamuel takes you right back to the Middle Ages. I hope my wedding will look this wonderful. This wedding really shows how attention to detail, focus on historic acuracy and a talented photographer can make a medieval theme.
As the ceremony neared the end, a black knight appeared, threatningly claiming the right of Prima Nocta (if you remember from the Braveheart movie - it's the local nobleman's right to sleep with the bride on her wedding night.) Obviously that resulted in a dramatic fight.

It's worthy of a Robin Hood wedding to plant an arrow in a target board and have a couple of lists hang down from the arrow with the names of each guest at each table.

Best way to make sure it's stable is to use a big round slice of wood, drill a hole in it for and arrow-like long cylindrical stick and make the stick look like a real arrow by adding fletchings in the other end. The target board can be painted with concentric rings in shifting colors.

The table number notes can be printed on parchment paper to give it a medieval feel.

The tudor era is sort of the English transistion from the Middle Ages to Renaissance, and a time of lavish clothing. I watched The Tudors, a series about Henry VIII, and marveled at the princly costumes. Jonathan Rhys Meyers, who played Henry looks every bit a prince charming, in spite the darkness of the story. The producers have paid a lot of attention to the costumes and therefore I am comfortable showing them to you here as a historical reference. Henry got married quite a few times, and the screenshots below is from The Tudors: Henry and Jane's wedding.
Wealthy men in the Tudor Times, often wore either a fitted jacket with a high color and pants or a very broad almost square upper coat, and slim pantyhose like this:
So if you want to look like Henry, go for rich silky fabrics, often with a metal shine and a big impressive hat with feathers. The white tight hoses might seem strange to a modern man, but I donøt think that there's anything girly about a tudor man. A final touch could be the golden chain of office around his neck, an important power symbol.
There are a few vendors who specializes in the tudor period like The tudor shoppe. You can also always have a tailer make the costume which will probably enable you to make it much more authentic. Just keep in mind that those handsome fabrics can be expensive.
For a long time I have been focusing on the medieval bride, but with every bride comes a groom, and certainly he must have had some influence on such a theme. So an entry on a primarily male accessory, the sword is in order. And although it was the exception rather than the rule, women did at times carry arms as well.

The middle ages weres a time of war, and so there was numerous weapons in the average arsenal. War is among the great motivaters for new technology. Professional armies ermerged i the Middle Ages, much like the effecient romans a 1000 years earlier.

The sword came in many variations in medieval times.
Such as the broad sword, that had 2 edges meant for cutting as oposed to stabing. It was the tool of the knights and very expensive. They can be made both for one and two hands.
The falchion sword wich was short and with a single edge. It was a cheap and low quality sword, meant for cutting and slicing.
The great sword is huge and also with two edges. It was meant to be wielded with two hands and could weigh around 4,5 kg / 10 pounds. It required a great amount of training to wield properly.
Longswords had an incredible reach and thrusting capacity and was also meant for two hands.
A sword were (and is) not a cheap choice for a groom, but it does gives a man a certain something. In the Bronze Age a warship could be bought with 10 bronze swords so you can understand the value of this weapon. If you are having the wedding at a medieval festival or reenactment museum, you might be able to borrow one. And once again I will remind you that you need a permission to carry that kind of weapon.
Medieval festivals can be amasing to attend, and when it is build around a wedding I simply have to post about it :)
The bride Jadwiga was 18 years old when she traveled to her groom's home to be wed. It was a lavish party and the records tells that the guests consumed no less than <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">320
bullocks, <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">1.500
sheep, <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">1.300
lambs, <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">500
calves, and <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">40.000
chicken.
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: DA;">The city takes the festival rather seriously, the young men stop cutting their hair, and the girls are hopeing for the honor of being offered the role of princess Jadwiga.

If you want to see more pictures, go to the festival's official website and see the many photos. There's some great inspiration for dressing both men and women. The next festival will be in july 2013. If you get the change, GO THERE :-)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-7939339614898101892012-07-09T12:13:00.000+02:002012-07-09T12:13:04.998+02:00Medieval FavorsI am not sure how common it is to have a little gift, or favors, for your guests today, but Americans does it and some danes as well. I am not quite sure how long it can be traced back through time, but I do know that amongst the vikings your wealth was not measured by your riches but by your generosity.
With what I've read it was normal in the 16th century to offer your guest some sort of gift when they came to a wedding, especially in Italy and France (in France called: bonbonniere). It was a combination of a sign of gratitude and a way to share the couple's fortune with their guests. Mostly the gift of five Jordan almonds are mentioned. Each of the almonds would represent wellwishes: health, welth, fertility, longevivity and happiness.
These gifts of almonds were used by the upper class of the medieval times, along with other exclusive confectionary. Obviously this would make a fine favor for a medieval themed wedding.

Edible favors in general are a good idea for this kind of theme. You can make or buy jam, mead, mustard and honey, or maybe include a genuine medieval recipe that your guests can try out at home. It can also be things like spices, herbs or salt, that had great value in medieval times. Chocolate hadn't arrived in Europe from South America at the time, so sorry guys - no wonderful chokolate favors.
I hope this quick list of ideas can inspire you to find the right favors. I must admit I had never heard of the tradition until I started planning my own wedding and I probably wouldn't have spend the money on it, if it wasn't because I got this amasing offer. I've made crests for both Robert and me and so because of a sale, I had them made into pin backs for the family, so wheter they come in costume or not, they are wearing the (new) family shield of arms. - in case any of my guests are reading this - Look the other way ;-)
Summer has come to little Denmark and I have been enjoying the sunny weather by riding my bike now and then.
I decided that I wanted to make a couple of easy examples of flower arrengements, that I would make from simply going through the forest and fields on the outskirts of the city. This means that it's something you can do yourself they day before the wedding (or enslave some family member to do it). It's a cheap and beautiful solution and probably more authentic than going to the florist.
At this time of the year the fields are sprinkled with small flowers in lavish colors and wild grass or grain can also be used. I was lucky to find this little piece of heaven - a field wrapped in flowers. It might be a good idea to check out the area you want to go plucking from a week or so before the wedding, so you know what you have to work with.
The first boquet I made I used the wild flowers from the field. There were poppys and chamomile and some yellow and purple ones I don't know the name of. I put them in a green glass vase. In medieval time glass was valuable, but if there ever was a time to impress your family and friends with how wealthy you were, a wedding is definatly it. So glass vases are alright to use, if you care about getting it historically accurate.
It took me 5-6 minuts to put together using wild grasses, the cornflowers, rushes and grain. It's colorful, natural and really brightens up a room.
The next arrangement was more forest inspired, using ferns, oak leaves, a few of the purple cornflowers and a pinecone. Finally I had gathered thisles last year and dried them and they look great - like litte brown spiky maces.
A lot of the plant that grow in the woods and are considered to be weeds, can actually be rather beautiful when put into a bouquet. This one I saw on a danish blog - www.heltsimpelt.blogspot.com - and she called it a tribute to her garden weed. I think it look great with grass, goutweed, buttercups and what I pressume are chive flowers.
What I am saying with this post is, that it doesn't have to be overly complicated or expensive to make a sweet flower or leave arrangement and that is how we are doing it at our wedding. The forest is filled with beautiful greenery that will fit a medieval wedding just perfect.Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-19724474261212186012012-07-01T11:47:00.000+02:002012-07-01T11:47:41.122+02:00Beau Coop's Medieval ShoesSometime even the fashion designers get inspired by medieval times. As the devoted medievalista I am I have browsed the great internet for modern medieval clothes and decor, and came across the Spring/Summer 2011/12 collection by Carrie Cooper, inpired by a dark tale of a medieval mass murderess. There are both men and women's shoes and I liked them so much I wanted to share :)Women's shoes
I promised to make a serie about the groom's outfit, and now that a year has passed with bridal gowns, I thought it was about time to get started. (Don't worry girls, I'll still post those gourges dresses when I come across them).
The knight is the obvious place to start, because I think the reason many men choose the medieval theme or agree to it, is that they are drawn by the strength and valor the the medieval man represent. The knight is the ultimate medieval warrior and real ladies man (plus you get to carry a sword!).
The title of knight could be bestowed anyone by the ruling king or queen, but by late medieval times the title was considered preserved for the nobility and those born into wealth. The thriving litterature ascribed the Knight a symbolism that idealised the title bearers. They became the perfect gentlemen, christians and guardians of justice. Today women sometimes say that they love when a man acts chivalrious, which is an ideal cultivated in the Middle Ages.
Now for an eksample of an outfit: I love this combination put together by Etsy and Ebay-seller Morgana's Collection. It's not as over the top as it could be but the elements: chainmail, helmet, tabard, sword, leather belt and shoes and gauntlets make an accurate and cool impression.

The colors could depend on the country you fought for, (like England was red during the crusades and the french was blue), they can represent a particular order of knights like the Templar Knights (white tabard with a red cross) or the order of knights of st john (black with white cross). Yet another background for the choice of colors could be the family crest, which often had a particular set of colors or animals that was embroided on the tabards and capes.

A tabard is fairly easy to make - a big rectangular piece of fabric with a hole for the head - or fairly cheap to buy. What I like about Morgana's Collection, is that they can make you a tabard with any color or pattern you can think of.
The chain mail can be a lot harder to aquire and more expensive. Try contacting the local reenactment club or a medieval fair, to hear if you can lend their chain mail for a payment. You can also buy one yourself if you want to. You must remember that it's heavy and can weigh around 15 kilos. It might not be something you want to run around with all day and night on your weddingday. My fiancee will be wearing a chainmail during the ceremony and when we go to have our photos taken. At dinner he will wear only a shirt and the tabard.

Gauntlets, shield and helmet are not necessary, but like with women and their jewelry - the more details - the better. A belt and leather shoes are however essential to achive the look and sword will definatly be the frosting on the cake. :)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-44247578513496630582012-06-21T09:51:00.001+02:002012-06-21T10:52:24.292+02:00Ana & Brian's period weddingWhen I saw these photos, my eyes almost popped out of my head. The bride wore a red medieval gown with cape, reminding me of the picture of the Bride from the wedding at Cana, by Gerard David (1500 AD). The fresh floral wreth is fitting for any periode bride and her long hair is like an extra jewel on her head.
The groom half resembles a viking from the halls of Valhalla and half a knight with his Gambeson war tunic and medieval sword. Some of the most succesfull themes require both men and women to spend time considering small things like belts and jewelry. The fur coat and headband really adds a final touch to the warrior tuxedo.
They celebrated with an outdoor ceremony, where a DARTH WADER(!) :-D spread rose petals before the bride and a hornblower announced the arrival of the groom. I love that they were so unafraid to incorporate thing that are meaningful to them and fun. You get the feeling that they wanted a relaxed extraordinary wedding
If the ceremony was scheduled earlier on my wedding day I think we would have enjoyed a couple of hours of medieval fun, games and dueling. Ana and Brian sure seem to have had some fun with their friends and dear ones.
She began writing her poems as a gift for friends at their wedding and it evolved from there. For now she only asks for a donation in return for a personal poem for your wedding and I wanted to share with you an eksample of her personal poetry:
I regret that I have been absent from the blog for most of this last month. My finals at the university is taking up most of my time, and I am looking forward to the holiday when I can go wedding-nuts. :) My own wedding is now in less than 4 months and I still haven't got my dress...
Anyway I wanted to at least write one entry in May and the olde symbol of this month of growth, is the maypole. Of course I failed to get it done in time, but I'll post it anyway (even though we are in June now, hush hush ;-) )
The maypole is an ancient way of celebrating the spring, often associated with festivals of fertility. Young unmarried boys and girls would dance in a circle around the pole.

Midsummer is another time where poles where included in celebrations, probably it represents fertility with it's phallic shape which goes well with a wedding that is sometimes followed by a baby or two ;-). It has also been argued that it can represent the tree of life, Ygdrasil from the Norse mythology. Dancing around the tree of life doesn't make it any less fit for a wedding I think.

It probably derives from ancient times, when the germans and scandinavians weren't yet christians. I really like this idea because it's festive, fun and slightly heathen.

The poles with bright ribbons can be used both for a reception activity and decorations like in the first picture. The strings can either be attached to a wheel that can turn so the dance can go on and on, or just be bound to the top, so the dancing will result in the pole quickly being wraped in a colorful braid.
This picture I found on Flikr, from a medieval wedding, where the guests participated in the dance around the pole, intwining the colorful bands.
When looking for this kind of dress think: simple, A-line/empire, fitted, (color, sleeves, a scoop/off the shoulder/sqaure neckline).

The red dress has no sleeves like most wedding gowns today, but the tight fit, the belt and the vibrant color makes it suitable for a medieval wedding. The shiny fabric also likens the valuable silk that was so sought after by the wealthy a 1000-500 years ago.

The picture above is a Maggie Sottero dress, modern, because it's white strapless and draped. But the slim silhuette fits the early medieval dresses, and the sparcling belt of crystals could act as an equivalent to the girdle belt.

This dress has the scoop neckline, a little bit of sleeves and an empire waist which became popular later in the Middle Ages.

The danish princess Mary wore a dress on her wedding day that could act as a modern medieval gown. It was designed by Uffe Frank and had a very simple, elegant silhuette. I like the ivory color, because it reminds me ever so slightly of gold. The details of the skirt are fun and the sleeves gives it that virtuous feeling that many medieval gowns had.

Finally if you cannot find a sleeved dress, you can always buy a small jacket to match:

This was a bit of an unusual post from me, I rarely write about modern dresses, but I am trying to make the blog as versatile as possible, and spreading the medieval madness to all of you. Good luck finding the right dress, whether it be medieval or not :)
Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-79188545823449697212012-04-07T14:32:00.001+02:002012-04-07T14:32:44.466+02:00Jewelry Designer Emily ArmentaI came across Emily Armenta when searching for medieval inspired jewelry for weddings. The designs has a timelessness to them that apeals to me and small elements that leads the mind to bygone days of knights and maidens. I had such a hard time choosing which pictures to show you, and then I didn't even get to the bangles and necklesses. It's a pricy choice, but if you want to shower yourself in medieval luxury, I think this is a pretty nice way. ;)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-46286292262580972202012-03-24T11:25:00.000+01:002012-03-24T11:25:36.965+01:00Rainy medieval wedding savior

What to do when then big day arrives and the beautiful outside photo location you chose is a nature's shower? Most medieval ceremonies takes place outside also, and it will probably be hard to convince the guests to remain seated in 45 minutes while slowly getting soaked. At least you can just smile, put on these fleur de lis rain boots on, take your weapon shield umbrella and go dancing through it!

I had to show you these two cute safety nets for the big day:
At least you can move through the rain in modern medievalness without getting the feet or the hair wet. And with the spring unfolding rainy days are very likely :)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-18935719019434514792012-03-21T10:01:00.000+01:002012-03-21T10:02:42.503+01:00Here Comes the BrideTraditionally Wagner's Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride), is played when the bride enters the church. I think it's a beautiful tune but I have considered what it will sound like outside a church in the idyllic setting for our ceremony. I never actually been a fan of organ music and I would like something that sounds a little more like a medieval wedding. So I found Enaid who made this wonderful album Avalon - a Celtic Legend. Especially one of their songs appeals to me. It's cheerful, light and I could see myself walking towards the love of my life to it: Road to Camelot.
There's also a song on the album called The Wedding you might want to listen to. The most important for the entry song is that you like it, don't choose it just because it's medieval. :)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-7266276707214196122012-03-18T11:46:00.001+01:002012-03-18T11:46:32.076+01:00Placemats for the kids - a DIY projectThis was made by an incredible creative bride, Liz, for her wedding in 2010. While at the local fast food place, she came up with an idea for the kids at her medieval inspired wedding. So she designed a placemat with small tasks like, colering, crossword puzzle, maze and word search with an overall medieval theme:

I really love the idea and it will give the kikds an opportunity to play along with the theme. There's also a couple of tic tac toe game and a connect the dots. They kan make their own shield too. It's easy to make something similar yourself, and if you like the idea just get going. :)Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-37337623908262872162012-03-07T08:58:00.000+01:002012-03-07T08:58:02.065+01:00Jason and Sheila's Medieval Wedding

This wonderful wedding was first featured on the OffBeatBride blog, but I have to show you some pictures as well, because this is truly a romantic wedding with a medieval theme carried out in such sweet details. The photographer is the amasing Kari Bellamy (London, UK).

The wedding was held a bright july day in 2011. The forest was their church and the High Corner Inn their banquet hall. With the bride's corset and silver crown the medieval gets a twist of elves and renaissance, but the overall feel is wonderful.

They held a pagan ceremony in a circle of freinds with a cord to symbolicly bind them together, hand and soul.

The forest photoshot is one of the softest and sweetest I have ever seen. They both look so happy and at peace. The woods are a great place to take medieval wedding pictures. It's natural, and the light falls in a delightful way when trees are there to part it.
The room was pretty modern, but with the wooden beams and the flowers it had the romantic medieval feel. The tables were set with ivy clad candelabras and small purple favor pouches.
Looks like a magical wedding and I hope the bride and groom had that day of medieval wonders that they planned for.Ceciliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15127138490497478364noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4846046317393014622.post-62671577593934218492012-03-05T13:29:00.000+01:002012-03-05T13:32:42.159+01:00Dress of the Month - MarchThis month I want to show you the ultimate royal dress, the rekonstruktion of a gown made for Queen Margrethe the 1. of Denmark. The original dress was made in the beginning of the 15th century and was kept in a closet near the queen's tomb in the Roskilde Cathedral. In 1659 it was stolen during the war by Sweedish soldiers and can be seen today in Uppsala Cathedral in Sweden.
The dress is made with gold brocade, the most exquisite medieval taylors had to offer. Just look at it! It might have been tradition to have a gold dress when you were extremely rich, because I have read a wedding budget from a wealthy danish nobleman that mentions a golden dress as a part of the bridal clothes (along with 11 other dresses). The golden fabric is embroided with silk silver thread.

It might not be inexpensive if you want to attempt to make one yourself, but it would no doubt look like a fairy tale dress and be the ultimate medieval princess gown. :-)
